2023 SENIOR THESIS PROJECT

Originally a story that began early ideation in late 2022 turned into a full fledged pitch bible

for a TV-14 rated animated series.  Deadtoon follows the story of digital artist and animator Chelsey Clark thrust in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. The zombies in this case being cartoon characters brought to life gone horribly wrong!

Now it's up to Chelsey and her rag tag team of animation industry colleague to hunt down the cartoon mutants and save the world.....hopefully.

Thesis Statement:

For my research, I explored the origins of televised animation, unionization efforts, and animated satirical commentary about working in animation made by artists in the industry.

My story “Deadtoon” is an homage to the medium of serialized television animation and a satirical take on the state of the entertainment industry. Recently, a social media movement known as “New Deal For Animation” emerged from animation artists and writers requesting higher compensation or equal pay when compared to live-action productions. This movement would highlight an ongoing battle between artists and corporations which was highly amplified due to the events of the Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild strikes. Based on my experiences working in a simulation of the animation production pipeline through educational institutions, I’ve learned that while the medium can be fun and rewarding, it is still a labor-intensive profession. The true nature of my story is having your life consumed by a profession that is often perceived to be easy.

DeadToon was created to present characters fighting against the men in suits and showcase a journey of self-discovery to know they are worth more than their artistic talents. My story provides a humorous, exaggerated, and even relatable lens of working in the creative arts industry.  Alongside battling monsters, the characters are stopping a formidable antagonist who symbolizes art controlled by corporate greed.

In recent times, animated properties have been removed from streaming sites or had minimal marketing efforts. These events provided a perspective on the current treatment of artists in animation within large companies. Ultimately, it was the biggest inspiration behind the creation of the story and themes of Deadtoon.
